Liver Health

Liver conditions can have different causes, including metabolic risk factors, alcohol, viral hepatitis and some medicines or supplements. Early disease may cause no obvious symptoms.

A liver review considers your history, examination and selected tests. A single blood test cannot describe every aspect of liver health.

Assessing liver health

Blood tests, ultrasound or other investigations may be selected according to your risks and findings. Normal liver enzymes do not rule out all liver disease.

Bring previous reports and a list of prescribed medicines, herbal products and supplements.

Prevention and ongoing care

  • Discuss hepatitis B vaccination and hepatitis testing where appropriate.
  • Review diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol alongside liver concerns.
  • Avoid products advertised as liver detoxes; some supplements can harm the liver.

Practical everyday guidance

  • Choose balanced meals with vegetables, pulses, whole grains and suitable protein sources.
  • Limit sugary drinks and frequent highly processed snacks.
  • Build regular activity gradually, taking existing health conditions into account.
  • Discuss alcohol use honestly; if dependence is possible, seek support before stopping abruptly.
  • Check with a clinician before using herbal remedies or supplements.
  • Do not share needles, razors or toothbrushes that may carry blood.

Warning signs

  • Vomiting blood or black stools: seek emergency care.
  • New confusion, marked drowsiness or collapse: seek emergency care.
  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin, especially with fever or pain.
  • Rapidly increasing abdominal swelling or difficulty breathing.
  • Dark urine with pale stools or persistent itching.
  • Persistent abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss or worsening fatigue.
