IBS is assessed through a symptom history and appropriate evaluation. Do not label new or persistent digestive symptoms as IBS without discussing them with a clinician.
Understanding recurring symptoms
A clinician may ask about pain, bowel habits, medicines, diet and the effect on daily life. Tests may be recommended to assess other possible causes.
IBS does not itself cause bowel cancer, but warning symptoms still need investigation.
An individual approach
- Treatment may combine dietary adjustments, activity, medicines and support for stress or sleep.
- Restrictive diets, including a low-FODMAP diet, should be time-limited and guided by a suitably qualified professional.
- Avoid assuming that every food-associated symptom is an allergy.
Practical everyday guidance
- Eat regular meals and allow time to eat without rushing.
- Drink fluids regularly unless you have a prescribed fluid restriction.
- Keep a brief food and symptom diary without cutting out many foods at once.
- Discuss gradual changes to soluble fibre rather than making abrupt increases.
- Build manageable physical activity into your routine.
- Maintain regular sleep and consider relaxation practices that suit you.
Warning signs
- Vomiting blood or passing black, tarry stools: seek urgent care.
- Heavy rectal bleeding, fainting or severe weakness: seek urgent care.
- Severe or worsening abdominal pain, especially with persistent vomiting.
- Unexplained weight loss or a persistent loss of appetite.
- Blood in stools or a persistent new change in bowel habits.
- Persistent fever or bowel symptoms that repeatedly wake you at night.
